Very pleased to announce the release of the second book in Derek Birk’s exiting Romans series, recorded in the ManCave. There is a lot of action in this one, and insight into the state of the country at the end of the Roman Empire. For research, I took a trip down to Bignor Roman Villa, the footprint of which was used for the setting of the bulk of the action in this one. It was useful to have a sense of the space and the size of the buildings and to imagine the characters scrambling from building to building in the rain as they fight for their lives. Derek knows his stuff but wears his research lightly and has developed a compelling cast of characters including some based on real historical figures. One such is the lead figure, Ambrosius Aurelianus, about whom very few facts are known, though Derek isn’t afraid to build on the legend and to draw together compelling strands of history to depict a truly memorable leader.
